  • Very rare: 1949 Super Action (SBA) Alto Saxophone with Mark VI neck, high F#, 39xxx

Only a few exemplars of the Super Action (aka “Super Balanced Action” or “SBA”) were already fitted by SELMER with a high F# key at this time. This beautiful Alto is one of them.

Its lovely darkened gold lacquer is still very much on hand, I’d say it is up to ca. 75% intact. The handcrafted gravure extending from the bell down to the bow is particularly beautiful and acts to upgrade the brilliance of this SBA Alto to a really attractive Sax!

At an earlier date this SBA Alto was fitted with a Mark VI neck which influences its intonation and sound for the better: its tone has a lovely core, a medium-dark timbre, a soft radiance and beautiful, filigree, even almost tender, overtones.

We have just thoroughly checked and fine-tuned this Alto in our SAXOPHONIC Workshop. The pads, although not new, are as good as new, the mechanics are still good and tight, spring tensions are good; the Sax lays good in the hands and except for the octave mechanics and thumb rest is already strongly reminiscent of the Mark VI ergonomics.

A rare Alto Sax, optically and sound-wise wonderful, and deployable for a wide variety of music styles!

Feel free to try this little Horn out: make an appointment to come visit us and compare it with many more Altos from our Legendary Saxophones Collection, or simply order it through our Online Shop and test it at home at your very own leisure.
