1933 Adolphe Sax Baritone Saxophone made by Henri SELMER Paris, 778
Not only is this Adolphe Sax baritone saxophone a rare instrument, but saxophones made by the inventor of the saxophone are also very rare visitors to SAXOPHONIC – Legendary Saxophones!
This baritone was built in 1933 by Henri SELMER Paris after SELMER took over the saxophone production from Adolphe Sax. The Adolphe Sax factory was located in Paris, 84 Rue Myrha. The Adolphe Sax workshops were taken over by Henri SELMER in 1928, and Adolphe Sax saxophones continued to be produced there for several years before Henri SELMER began manufacturing exclusively SELMER saxophones after 1944. Between 1931 and 1944, approximately 3,600 Adolphe Sax saxophones were built by SELMER.
Now to this Adolphe Sax baritone saxophone with the serial number 778: as mentioned above, it was built in 1933 and shipped to Ben Davis – later SELMER London – in July of the same year. There it was lacquered, engraved, padded, and prepared for sale for the British market. The body already bears the SELMER production number 11283, which was stamped in the 1930s.
We have just completely overhauled this rare baritone saxophone in our SAXOPHONIC workshop. As is often the case, we used the highest quality French CHANU pads for this saxophone. As for the resonators, we opted for slightly convex INOX resonators without rivets. Now this low Bb baritone is once again really easy to play.
The rest of the saxophone is still in pretty good shape, considering its impressive age of over 90 years: the reinforcement plates in the knee joint and upper bow are still in their original form, but of course there are a few dents, scratches, and other signs of wear here and there (see photos). The lacquer is still in pretty good condition and has darkened nicely over the decades. There are solder joints on the key cage for the low Eb key.
A rare baritone saxophone with great charisma and a really good sound that truly deserves to be played again!
