1953 SELMER Super Action (SBA), Player’s Horn, very rare US version with high F#, 52xxx
Of all the tenor saxophones in the “Super Action” (SBA) model series built by Henri SELMER Paris, around 4,400 were shipped to SELMER USA in Elkhart, where they were varnished, engraved and finally assembled.
This 1953 SELMER SBA tenor saxophone (serial number 52xxx) is a very rare model with a high F# key. Only about 110-120 (!) of this model were made!
The beautiful floral hand engraving on bell and knee is typical of all SELMER saxophones engraved at SELMER USA during this period. The complete engraving is very well recognizable, although the varnish has been completely worn away in the more than 70 “years of life” of this SBA. Due to the remaining sharpness of the engraving and the other stampings, it is highly probable that this SELMER SBA has never been relaquered.
The fact that this SELMER SBA has been played professionally can be felt and heard immediately when you blow into it for the first time: it starts really well and has a lot of radiance when played vigorously. Change the embouchure a little and its softer side is revealed, making it a versatile jazz saxophone!
The existing neck, which was selected during the production of the saxophone at the SELMER factory in Mantes la Ville near Paris and bears the same serial number as the saxophone itself, is still in good condition, despite visible signs of repair.
This SELMER SBA tenor sax was completely overhauled about 2 years ago and has just been fine-tuned in our SAXOPHONIC workshop.
All in all: a rare PRO sax with considerable potential for increase in value…
