The Henri SELMER Paris Super Action, known almost exclusively among collectors as the Super Balanced Action (SBA), was produced between 1947 and 1954. Connoisseurs regard it as one of the finest-sounding saxophones ever built. It preserves the tonal richness of its predecessor, the Balanced Action (BA), while introducing groundbreaking mechanical innovations.

The Best of Both Worlds: Why the SBA is So Coveted

The SELMER SBA represents the evolution of a legend. While the Balanced Action (BA) still featured a continuous rod for the right hand, the Super Action introduced split rods for the lower keys. The result? A significantly more precise and responsive action.

The Sound: Incredibly resonant, dark, and “singing.” It often offers more projection than the BA while remaining softer at its core than the subsequent Mark VI.
Exclusivity: Since it was only in production for about seven years (serial numbers approximately 35,xxx to 55,xxx), it is much rarer to find than a Mark VI.
The Choice of Legends: Icons such as Paul Desmond (Dave Brubeck Quartet) and the young John Coltrane relied on the SELMER SBA to define their sound.
