1957 SELMER Mark VI Alto Saxophone – firsthand (!)- original lacquer, engraving, 73xxx
Among our special Saxophones, this beautiful specimen is in a class of its own!
It was lovingly manufactured by the instrument makers at SELMER in 1957 and delivered to the F.C. Louis music store in Saarbrücken in March 1958 where it was acquired by the first owner who loved to play it all his life and always treated it like the apple of his eye. This beautiful Mark VI Alto Saxophone still has a good 95% of its original lacquer, which has darkened really nicely in its 65 years of life and now has the color of a robust honey. Fortunately, the Horn was never damaged – neck, body, bow and bell are intact, which is extremely rare, especially for the bow of a Saxophone of this vintage age!
The SELMER engravers gave this Alto a beautiful floral gravure that extends from the bell down to the bow.
We have just given this special instrument a SAXOPHONIC Premium overhaul, because the original (!) pads were no longer usable after so many decades. Now it is technically flawless again and can be played wonderfully, so that its beautiful sound can spread with beautifully renewed vigor.
And speaking of sound: as I have often written, Vintage SELMER Saxophones often sound a bit like how they look. This 1957 SELMER Mark VI confirms this thesis once again: its timbre is rather dark with a texture that reminds me of robust honey. Velvety softness envelops the Mark VI-typical centered core, which can develop assertiveness spiced with beautiful overtones when played more openly.
I love this Horn! And if I could, I would keep it!
