  • 1939 SELMER Balanced Action Tenor Saxophone with “Sailboat on the Sea” gravure, 29xxx

There are a lot of myths floating around the SELMER Vintage Saxophones. One of them is that the SELMER Saxophones with exceptional gravure are supposed to be especially good Saxophones. From my experience, I cannot confirm this myth, even though this beautiful SELMER Balanced Action Tenor Saxophone with its “Sailboat on the sea” engraving is a really good Tenor Sax. Completely stripped and freshly refurbished, this BA is visually an eye-catcher and technically flawless. The large, floral gravure extending from the bell down to the bow was engraved around the oval picture placed in the center of the bell depicting the aforementioned motif. The pure brass revealed after the lacquer was stripped gives the Horn that extra vintage look.

And sound-wise? Its beautiful warm timbre develops powerful projection when played more openly. Typically Balanced Action, its sound fills the whole room. One gets the impression that this Sax needs a really big room, lots of people, a stage and a playing partner who wants to exalt the aesthetics of this Saxophone with his playing. Old-style playing á la Hawkins or Webster, but also Redman-style jazz, comes to mind in connection with this Balanced Action Tenor Saxophone.

Are you the special person for this extraordinary Balanced Action Tenor Sax? Of course, if you don’t like the Saxophone, you can send it back to us and we will refund the purchase price.
